Cinema and Documentary Production

This course is designed to provide students with practical skills and knoweldge necessary for creating compelling documentaries. By exploring the fundamentals of sound documentary research and story development processes through lectures and screenings, students will be tasked with producing a short-form documentary, including all principle photography and all post-production processes.

A rigorous study and application of the key editing principles required to tell cinematic stories after all the principle photography is captured. Emphasis is placed on exploring both the advanced techniques and artistic decisions in the entire post-production process. These stages include: rough assembly editing, dialogue editing, integration of graphics/ effects, color grading, audio mixing, final edit, and exported deliverable. This course employees the principle photography for a film project initially begun in the Methods of Cinematography course.

Students will learn the language and storytelling power of sound design as relates to film and documentary projects. Sound effects, Foley, voice-overs, ambient noise, music score, automated dialogue replacement, and advanced production techniques are examined with practical assignments and class exercises. Special attention is given to mixing and mastering digital audio tracks and builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Audio Production for Digital Media course. This course requires a technology fee.

This course covers the fundamentals concepts of cinematography as it relates to cameras, lenses, lighting and set design. Students will study and explore various techniques of illumination and capture of narrative storytelling on film sets. This course also covers the critical components of filmmaking as it relates to cameras and actors and their interaction with each other. Additionally, the course will expose students to the relational aspect of filmmaking, meeting the expectations of actors on set, location scouting and leading a film crew. Students will apply learning to execute the Principle Photography stage of producing an original short film. This course requires a technology fee.

This course explores the art and technique of capturing compelling aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with cameras. Provides students with hands-on experience in operating drones, understanding airspace regulations, composing aerial shots, and editing drone footage to create professional-quality videos. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, and projects, students will develop the skills necessary to produce visually stunning drone videos for various purposes, including film, advertising, journalism, and more. This course requires a technology fee.

For this course, students will be working primarily in Apple's Logic ProX, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe Audition. A survey of various techniques for sound design for visual media, such as film and television. The exploration of the basic principles required to develop and write scripts for film production. Topics of study and application include: story ideas (loglines), character bios, story treatments (beat sheets and step outlines), early script drafts, and final script submissions. This class also includes script workshops where pages are read and helpful notes (critiques/suggestions) are provided to the screenwriter.

Student projects may include mapping out the requests to deliver AVL support for a live presentation/event/service. Emphasis is placed on both technical skills acquisition and creativity that engages the senses of a live audience.

An advanced study of the visual design principles and software tools learned from the Intro to Graphic Design course. Through a combination of theoretical concepts and practical applications, students will further refine their skills in creating compelling visual designs. Additionally, principles and techniques of 3D animation will be explored with an emphasis placed on creating short animated sequences. Students will learn how to use industry-standard software (including Adobe Creative Cloud, Cinema 4D and Blender) to create dynamic and engaging projects. Topics covered include modeling, rigging, texturing, lighting, and rendering. Through hands-on projects and assignments, students will develop their skills in storytelling, character animation, and visual effects. This course requires a technology fee.

Emphasis will be placed on the integration of digital photography, graphics, video and text to create a user-friendly navigation flow of content for digital online consumers. This course introduces students to immersive and multidimensional sound practices for interactive environments such as theatrical audio, VR, AR, and gaming. Topics include surround sound formats, object-based audio, multichannel audio, and spatial design. Students will explore technologies such as Dolby Atmos, binaural audio, Audiokinetic Wwise, and Meta spatial tools. Emphasis is placed on real-time audio spatialization, digital environment acoustics, and user-centered sound experiences.
